Flight attendant warns plane toilets are truly disgusting and should be avoided

A cabin crew member has spoken out about plane toilets and claims she "tries to avoid" using them as much as possible. Now, as passengers most of us tend to use the loo at least once on a flight unless it’s particularly short – but she says you should do your best to stay away from the “dirty” bathroom.

The 33-year-old woman, who works as a flight attendant, decided to give travellers a peek behind the curtain on Reddit by answering questions anonymously. During the session – at which point she was apparently "sitting through turbulence" – one person asked how unhygienic aircraft really are saying "Real talk: How dirty are the planes? What about the bathroom?"

The flight attendant went on to reveal that passenger planes are more disgusting than you many have thought. Many of us are under the impression that planes are given a good scrub after a flight, or at the end of the day, but the cabin crew member said "planes are filthy”.

She added: "They don't disinfect them. Bathrooms are basically just wiped down quickly between flights." However, she did add: "They cleaned more during covid from what I remember."

Another curious poster asked whether flight attendants got their own toilet on board – as he had never seen one head into one. The crew member responded: "Yep we do. Most of us try to avoid going in there if possible."

It makes sense when you consider the comments of other airline workers. Flight attendants have previously warned that you should always keep your shoes on when you're heading to the onboard toilet.

That's because the water on the toilet floor isn’t spilled from the sink – it’s actually urine. Another cabin crew member explained that this happens for a number of reasons.

Brenda Orelus, from Miami, has worked in the skies for nine years and posts about her life on TikTok, @flightbae.b. She explained: "little boys who are pointing and shooting, they kinda point and shoot everywhere.”

So, that means it may land on the floor – or even on the toilet roll. For this reason, Brenda advises using the tissues instead of the loo roll as it is usually in a more enclosed box that gets less urine on it. Lovely.

Another flight attendant advised : "It sounds dramatic but I highly recommend you avoid direct contact with as many surfaces as possible, in the aeroplane loo cubicle. That starts from opening the door. Use your foot or wear plastic, disposable gloves to touch the handle.

"Most aeroplane loos have wipes next to the sink, which are there to be used – wipe down every surface before you touch it. If that’s not possible, take some sheets of loo roll and use them to avoid touching anything directly with your fingertips.

"Worst case scenario, use your knuckles, rather than your fingers and hand sanitise straight after. Finally, try your best to hover over the loo seat and avoid actually sitting down and touching it. If you’re finding it hard to balance, there are usually handles that you can hold on to, but again, wipe them down first or cover them with loo roll. The same applies to touching the flush button."
