Flight attendant’s comeback silences woman demanding to smoke ‘600 cigarettes’

An experienced flight attendant shut down a woman who was demanding to smoke a cigarette mid-flight in a clever way. Brits were left in hysterics after a video clip of the incident was recently shared on Reddit.

It has been illegal to smoke on a plane since the 2007 with many airlines banning the practice in the 1990s. But that didn’t stop one English woman from wanting to do so. The viral video showed her fuming that she was unable to light up after buying 600 cigarettes from the Duty Free trolley.

More than 46,000 people liked the clip, which showed the cabin crew member de-escalating the situation with a funny quip. It even left the irate customer laughing.

The video begins with a flight attendant walking down the aisle asking passengers if they want to buy “cigarettes, spirits or tobacco”. Generally, items like this are tax free when purchased on a plane – making them a good deal compared to prices at home.

The crew member then handed over three large cartons to a woman sitting in the window seat. Furiously, she asked: “So why have you just sold me 600 fags if I can’t smoke one?

“Come on. That’s not on that. You just saw me. You’ve taken my money for 600 fags and I can’t smoke one. Why?”

The cabin crew member hit back with a cheeky comparison that clearly got his point across. He said: “I take your point, but they sell condoms in Boots. Need I say more?”

The passengers – including the irate woman – fell about laughing at the joke and the situation was quickly calm. The video was uploaded to Reddit, in the r/maybemaybemaybe section just four days ago though it has appeared online before in various places since it was filmed many years ago.

More than 1,200 people weighed in on the situation with many finding the flight attendant both excellent at his job and incredibly funny. One person wrote: “When you’ve mastered the art of de-escalation.”

“That guy was so smart to make that conversation lighter. He's funny too,” commented another while a surprised poster noted: “I am astounded she laughed and the situation de-escalated so easily. Good for her, her brain is still functional.”

Another said: “Kill 'em with kindness. That doesn’t mean you don’t still have a job to do, but you can disarm most people’s hostility and sometimes you can turn an irate, almost violent person into your favourite customer. I don’t know what it is, maybe a respect thing.”

Many also sympathised with the woman and argued that she wasn’t really angry. One person said: “I got the impression they weren't actually upset just playin' around.”

Another added: “And the laugh and smile at the end shows how humans can be… so rare but lovely.” Another said: “She knows she can’t smoke on the plane. She was having a laugh.”

Some foreigners were confused by the jokey comment though. One person happily explained: “Boots is like a pharmacy store and they sell condoms like most, but that doesn't mean you can use them in the store.”

Rules on cigarettes sales have changed since the video and it’s important to remember them when travelling back to the UK from your holiday. According to Gov.uk you can now bring no more than 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco.

If you exceed this amount you must pay tax and duty on both. You must also transport them yourself and must use them yourself or give them as a gift – you cannot sell them. You must also be over 18 even if you purchased the cigarettes in a country with a lower legal age for sale.

If you are caught smoking on a plane the consequences can be dire. Depending on the airline you can face a massive fine and criminal charges for the act. E-cigarettes are classed as smoking on planes too – so leave the vape in your bag!

Considering smoking on planes is outlawed, many Brits are confused as to why many planes still have ashtrays in the bathrooms. Cabin crew member, Kaylee, from Canada, recently answered a question thousands of Brits have wondered about while using the plane’s toilet.

The answer is “Because if someone forgets. It's a safe place to put the cigarette.” Even though smoking is banned, airlines don’t want those breaking the rule to dispose of the cigarette in an unsafe way.

Dropping a lit cigarette in a bin or the toilet could cause a fire – which is a disaster on a plane. So, just in case, there is an ashtray, but you should still never smoke on a flight.
