Flight attendant’s duty free hack lets you take more luggage on plane for free

A flight attendant of over 10 years has explained his hack for getting extra baggage free. Miguel Muñoz told the Express that his “duty-free hack” allows passengers to bring more luggage onto the plane outside of their one allowed cabin bag.

Miguel explained that “duty-free bags don't count as carry-on baggage” which makes sense because otherwise people wouldn’t be able to shop in the airport. He explained: "If you have something that doesn't fit in your suitcase or you want to bring an extra bag on board, here's the trick.

"All you have to do is carry a duty-free bag. Or ask for one at the duty-free shop and you place whatever you want in the shopping bag."

The cabin crew member noted: "there is obviously limited space, but at least you are bringing an extra bag to the cabin with you". Airlines often only allow one small bag on board which must fit underneath the seat. If passengers want to check in an additional bag or carry more onto the plane they’ll often be charged a fee to do so.

Miguel’s trick means you’ll get to bring an extra bag for free – and it works if your checked-in bag is too heavy as well. Just remove some of your belongings from the baggage and then pop them in a duty free bag when you get through security.

Miguel said: "Now you know. If you ever find yourself in that situation, just put whatever you need in a duty-free bag. You are welcome!" And, he noted that he uses the trick every time he goes on holiday.

He explained: "I know the trick because I always do this when I fly as a passenger. And when I see people coming on board with a duty-free bag that looks VERY full I always assume they are using it for this purpose as it obviously doesn't contain just one perfume or bottle of wine.

"But a lot of crew don't know this and most won't realise. If you come on board with one piece of luggage, which you are allowed to, and a duty-free bag with some of your belongings, no one will say anything."

He added that you can also pack soft clothes into a pillowcase to bring more onto the plane. Miguel noted: “It's genius. As a crew, I would never suspect anything."

Miguel's not the only person with a hack for bringing extra items onto the plane. A travel hack has gone viral after a travel content creator used it to sneak extra luggage onto a plane.

TikTok user Travel with Ivon posted a clip showing her stuffing an empty pillow case with clothes. Passengers are usually allowed to bring a pillow on-board without any extra charge for cabin baggage.

This means that you can use precious suitcase space for other personal items and use the clothes-filled pillow case to get some sleep. She simply captioned the video: “Airport pillow hack”.

And, in another video, TikTok user Larissa, @is.me.larry, tried the trick herself, reports news.com.au. “We tried the airport pillow hack,” she said while walking through the airport terminal. “And we SUCCEEDED.”

Larissa said she managed to save the equivalent of £67 in baggage fees with the hack. She said she managed to get 6kg of clothing in the pillow.
