Flight attendants say you can recline your seat but not for entire flights

Thousands of Brits are planning to fly away on holiday over Easter or the summer.

After years of the pandemic curtailing airlines, and last years chaotic delays and cancellations, most of us are still getting used to travel again.

This means that plenty of people are having to re-learn plane and airport etiquette.

While it may seem obvious, some flight attendants claim that passenger behaviour has become markedly worse since the pandemic.

One of the most polarising arguments that causes passengers to flip their lid while travelling is whether it’s OK to recline your seat or not.

In the past, we’ve seen people shout at those who do so, kick their seats or even give them a “red card” for sitting with their seat back at an angle.

Plus people have even been given upgrades when someone is reclining in front of them.

But, it seems flight attendants have decided to wade in and settle the debate once and for all.

In an Insider poll, five out of six cabin crew members said that passengers had a right to recline the seats.

Andrew Kothlow of the blog "Two Guys on a Plane" said: "It's definitely not rude to recline your seat.

"I personally think it's rude to believe that a person will not try to get as comfortable as possible if the option exists to them — especially on a long flight."

Rich Henderson, a flight attendant for a US carrier noted: "I do understand there might be certain circumstances where a passenger may want the seat in front of them in the upright position, like while eating a meal, but I think in general, passengers should be allowed to use the features of the seat that they paid for.

“Telling a passenger that they can't recline their seat is like saying they can't use their tray table."

However, one Delta worker said that reclining in economy was “rude” though they thought partially reclined was OK.

Whether you choose to recline or not it seems there is one moment or hard-and-fast etiquette that you should follow.

Leysha Perez, a stewardess, said: "When you're eating your food you're going to be sitting up anyway, so it would be good etiquette to bring your seat up while you're eating."

Over on Reddit, members of the public weighed in with their opinions on the matter.

One person said: “In this post: tall people claim it's impolite, short people claim the recline is there for a reason.”

A second added: “I never recline my chair any more. I know that I can get away with it, but the increase in comfort for me is NOTHING compared to the turmoil that the person behind me must face.”

“You have the right to do it, but it sucks,” said one man.

While another said: “I always ask the person behind me if it's ok if I recline the seat.

“I fly at least once a month for the past 10 years and I've never had anyone say no.”
