Flight attendants warn passengers not to wear shorts or touch tables on planes

We all know that planes aren’t the most hygienic places on the planet, but usually we expect that they’ve had a thorough clean down in between journeys.

And, while we’re hardly going to walk barefoot into the toilet – at least most of us that is – there are some areas which we’d assume were thoroughly sanitised.

Except, unfortunately, flight attendants and new research claim planes might not be as clean as we think.

Especially the tray tables that we all eat off.

Posting on TikTok, user @coco_soars said: “Guess the dirtiest part of an aeroplane…

“Did you guess a) the seatbelt buckle, b) the toilet flush button, c) the tray table or d) the air vent?”

“If you guessed b) the toilet flush button… sorry. If you guessed c) the tray table you are correct.”

She continued: “So a study found that the tray tables actually carry eight times more bacteria than the toilet flush buttons.

“No worries, you can always just wipe it down.”

Honestly, we’ll be sanitising them before we even touch them from now on!

But, that’s not where the filthiness ends.

Flight attendant, @tommycimato, posted a video on TikTok with five health and hygiene tips for airline passengers.

“Do not fall asleep or lean your head on the window,” said Tommy.

“You are not the only one that has done that and you don't know how many people or children have wiped their hands or other things all over the window.”

  • 'As hotel workers these are the most disgusting things we've seen guests do'

He also recommended not wearing shorts on planes.

“Don’t or try not to wear shorts when you're on an airplane,” he continued.

“It's the same thing as the window – you never know how clean it's going to be, so if you have pants, you're going to have less germs.”

And, air hostess, @katkamalani, added her comments and revealed the “nastiest parts on a plane from a flight attendant.”

In the clip, she said: “First thing’s first, do not touch the back seat pocket.

“They clean them out between flights, but they don’t sanitise them.

“Think of all the dirty tissues, barf bags and garbage that has been in there.”

Kat continued: “Next if you’re gonna use your tray table make sure you sanitise it.

“I have seen so many parents use this as a changing table for their child’s diaper and then they put it in the back seat pocket.”

Filming the air conditioner vents, she noted: “Yeah those air vents have seen thousands of hands, wipe them down before you touch them.”

Looking at the leaflet showing what to do in an emergency, Kat said: “Our safety guide cards – we don’t sanitise them and a lot of people touch and read these to pass by time. Just wipe it.”

She went on to say: “When entering the lavatory use a tissue to lock the door.”

In the comments of Kat’s clip one person wrote: “Soooo, what DOES get cleaned?”

While another said: “So basically EVERYTHING.”

“I’ll walk, thanks,” joked a third.
