British Airways and easyJet have said they will refund holidaymakers for holidaymakers unable to travel during lockdown. However, Ryanair and Wizz Air have both said they will not. This is what you need to know about the carriers’ current stance on refunding passengers.
BA is continuing to allow travellers to cancel or rearrange their getaways.
A British Airways spokesman told Express.co.uk: “We note the Prime Minister’s announcement of a new national lockdown for England to slow the spread of Covid-19.
“Like other businesses, we are assessing the new information and we will keep our customers updated on any changes to their travel plans.”
The airline’s Book with Confidence policy was implemented prior to the lockdown announcement.
Jet-setters can change the dates and destination of their booking without incurring a change fee, although they will need to pay any difference in price.
If they decide they no longer want to travel, they can cancel their booking and BA will give you a voucher to the same value for a future booking.
Both options apply to bookings made from March 3, 2020, onwards for journeys that are due to have been completed by August 31, 2021.
BA has urged travellers not to contact the company. The website explained: “If your flight is cancelled, please rest assured that we’ll contact you. We’re currently experiencing extremely high call volumes. Please don’t call or message unless you’re travelling in the next 72 hours so we can help those needing urgent rebooking.”
easyJet holidays is set to cancel all package holiday deals while easyJet flights due to take place during lockdown are being “reviewed.”
CEO of easyJet Johan Lundgren said that the airline will operate its planned schedule until Thursday and the airline “currently reviewing our flying programme over the lockdown period”.
He added: “It is likely that much of the UK touching schedule will be cancelled during lockdown with our planned flying set to resume in early December.”
If your easyJet flight is cancelled you can change for free, receive a voucher for the value of the whole booking or receive a full refund.
Ryanair has said that if flights continue to go ahead, passengers will not be able to get their money back. They will, however, be allowed to change their dates of travel.
“Customers who book for travel in October and November will be able to change their flights with zero change fee to travel until March 21, 2021. Changes must be made at least seven days prior to the departure date of the original booking,” stated the Ryanair website.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast today, Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary said: “If the flights are operating there won’t be any refunds, although they will be able to avail of our change policy. We allow people to change their flight timings to flights on later dates if necessary. But if the flight is operating there won’t be any refunds.”
An airline spokeswoman told Express.co.uk: “Ryanair recently announced it is reducing its winter schedule taking capacity down to 40 percent compared to the prior year. Following these reductions, our revised UK schedule will operate as normal.
“Customers who do not wish to travel can change their November flights to a later date with no change fee.”
Wizz Air passengers will pay to pay a fee to change their flight or cancel if they only paid a basic fare.
Travellers who added Wizz Air Flex have more flexibility. An airline spokeswoman told Express.co.uk: “Those who added WIZZ Flex to their booking have the option to cancel their flight up to three hours before departure without any cancellation fee and get 100 percent of the original fare immediately reimbursed in airline credit.”
She added: “As always, if Wizz Air cancels a flight, passengers are entitled to either 120 percent of the original fare in airline credit, or to a 100 percent cash refund or the option to rebook for free.”
