Free Bonfire Night events in the UK as fireworks in Leeds and London cancelled

This weekend, the UK prepares to celebrate Bonfire Night with plenty of fireworks, bonfires and fun events – after all, November 5 is all about dazzling displays and snacks including pie, peas and toffee apples.

There are thousands of celebrations taking place in local fields, cricket pitches, school grounds and parks.

However, some large Bonfire Night parties have been cancelled in recent weeks.

Manchester, Leeds, Hackney in London, Cardiff and Glasgow have all cut some firework displays and evening celebrations due to financial strain, while it’s the third year that Glasgow hasn’t celebrated since the pandemic made the council end the event in 2020.

Manchester City Council cited “escalating costs” for the cancellation of its 100,000 person fireworks night.

Hackney cited a hit on cash and said the decision matched up with their concerns about air quality and pollution.

Hammersmith and Fulham have also announced their bonfire night events will not go ahead.

The council told Brits to enjoy the holiday at home instead.

In Cornwall, Penzance cut its Guy Fawkes night celebrations after 48-years of hosting the event, while Blackheath and Southwark councils, in London, have slashed their community fireworks event.

Seaford, in East Sussex, has begun to crowdfund for their Bonfire Night celebrations as they claim the costs have doubled in the last four years.

In Bolton, Leverhulme Park’s firework display has also been cancelled.

While in Dundee the council has scrapped Bonfire Night and re-distributed the cash to other projects.

Luckily there are still plenty of Guy Fawkes Night celebrations and events to enjoy.
