Although passengers will be able to take more than 100ml of liquid on a cruise ship, there are still a few banned items guests should watch out for. From candles to baby monitors, some items won’t get through security.
Royal Caribbean is one of the world’s biggest cruise companies and one of the most popular brands in the UK.
It states on its website: “Weapons, illegal drugs, and other items that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of our guests and crew are prohibited.
“These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found.
“Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, flammable liquids, explosives, and dangerous chemicals will not be returned.”
While it’s no surprise to see weapons on the banned items list, some forbidden products might be more of a shock.
Candles and incense
Passengers aren’t allowed to take any item that can produce an open flame onto a cruise ship due to fire concerns.
Cruise experts at the Points Guy, recommend passengers take battery operated tealights if they want to set the mood.
Coffee makers and hot plates
Items that generate heat including coffee makers and hot plates won’t be allowed in a passenger’s cruise cabin.
However, many ships offer tea and coffee on a complimentary basis which means guests have no need to make their own.
Baby monitors
Most baby monitors won’t work very well on a cruise ship due to the majority of ships having metal walls.
Food
Home-made and perishable food won’t be allowed onto a cruise ship in most cases. However, passengers will normally be allowed to bring wrapped food and snacks onboard.
This shouldn’t be a huge problem for most guests as cruise ships are known for their huge array of restaurants.
Alcohol
Royal Caribbean allows passengers to bring up to two 750ml bottles of wine or champagne per cabin.
Carnival allows one bottle of wine per adult while Disney will allow either two bottles or six beers per cabin.
Alcohol must be in a carry-on bag and not in checked luggage or it will be confiscated. Bottles should also be unopened or sealed.
Some cruise lines may also charge a corkage fee for bottles which can be as much as $25 (£22).
Prohibited items (Royal Carribbean):
- Firearms and ammunition, including realistic replicas.
- Sharp objects, including all knives and scissors. (Note: Personal grooming items such as safety razors are allowed. Scissors with blade length less than four inches are allowed.)
- Illegal drugs and substances
- CBD oil / CBD products
- Candles, incense, coffee makers, clothes irons, travel steamers and hot plates. (Items that generate heat or produce an open flame. This includes heating pads, clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard. NOTE: The only exception to this policy are curling irons and hair straighteners. Matches and normal lighteners are allowed onboard. However “torch lighters” and novelty lighters that look like guns are not allowed onboard. Torch lighters emit a powerful concentrated flame, and therefore are prohibited.
- Hoverboards
- Martial arts, self defense, and sports gear, including handcuffs, pepper spray, and night sticks.
- Flammable liquids and explosives, including lighter fluid and fireworks.
- Hookahs and water hookah pipes.
- HAM radios
- Baby monitors
- Electrical extension cords
- Dangerous chemicals, including bleach and paint.
- Perishable food and meat products
- Alcoholic beverages (Note: On boarding day, each stateroom may bring up to two 750 ml bottles of wine or champagne. Guests who purchase alcohol bottles onboard, in a port-of-call, or bring more than the two permitted bottles on boarding day, will have their items safely stored by the ship. These bottles will be returned on the last day onboard for enjoyment once home. Alcoholic beverages seized on embarkation day will not be returned.)
