Furious tourists defend seaside town as mum says it ‘makes her feel sick’

Residents and fans of a popular Victorian seaside town have leapt to its defence after a visitor claimed it was "eerie".

People have hit back after a mum complained that North Yorkshire resort Saltburn-by-the-Sea left her "feeling sick" because of a past bad experience.

The woman posted anonymously on a Mumsnet forum about her experience at the seaside spot, which quickly racked up a big response, according to Yorkshire Live.

In the post she wrote: "Hi. I'm off to Saltburn near Whitby tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March.

"The weekend before the lockdown.

"The place was so eerie, I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

"The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

"Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?"

Angry Saltburn locals and visitors that adore the town rushed to defend the "good old fashioned" seaside town.

One person said: "What an odd thing to say. Saltburn has a calmness about it. It’s a happy place and makes me smile. I also live here."

While another added: "Oh good. Don't come back. I love Saltburn and so glad it's on my doorstep. Sadly the sheer volume of holidaymakers has meant we've never been this year."

One third continued: "Never heard such utter tosh…. Spent hours on the pier as a child watching my dad fishing particularly when the Mackerel came in. It’s a beautiful pier."

While a fourth added: "I love the place, it's not eerie it is powerful, the sea and the cliffs put you in your place, just stunning!!"

Other people praised the town's Victorian feel, saying they loved its authenticity and the fact that it was not as commercialised as other seaside spots.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, which is in the Redcar and Cleveland area of North Yorkshire, boasts a charismatic Victorian seaside feel.

It features striking cliffside views and gorgeous walks that allow you to take in the coastal vista.
