The days of glamorous air travel are long gone. Most travellers jet off to their holidays in economy, with minimum service and cramped seats.
Flight upgrades, while rare, mean holidaymakers can enjoy first or business class for the price of economy.
But it’s not easy to be upgraded.
One little-known rule, however, could see holidaymakers get the first class treatment without forking out the cash.
A travel hacker gave an insight to fellow travellers on Quora.
Rick Brown said: “If your seat is broken, you can request a new seat.
“If one is not available in economy, they have to put you in first.”
The rule could mean an instant upgrade.
Brian Kelly agreed and said: “I’ve been on several packed flights where passengers had broken coach seats and were reassigned to business or first since they were the only seats left.”
However, Rick also had a warning to holidaymakers who could be tempted to take matters into their own hands.
He said: “Don’t break your seat on purpose, it’s a crime.”
Holidaymakers who want an upgrade should be observant.
Simply pointing out their seat is broken could mean more luxury on their flight.
Brian had more hacks for travellers who wanted a free upgrade.
He said: “One of my favourite mottos when it comes to miles and points is, ‘it never hurts to ask’.
“You’d be surprised at how empowered check-in agents and gate agents are when it comes to re-assigning passengers.
“I recommend being extremely friendly and appreciative.
“Frontline employees deal with lunatics and generally ungrateful people all day, so if you can quickly and nicely ask them about getting an upgrade, you might be surprised at what could happen.”
However, he also shared some people may have more luck with this technique than others.
He said: “This method works well for honeymooners or good looking people who know how to flirt.”
If all else failed, Brian recommended “befriending someone who works for an airline”.
“One of their key perks is free travel for family and friends,” he added.
