Google Maps Street View is intended for use as a serious geographical tool. It can be very useful for exploring a location from ground view. However, it also throws up some highly intriguing images.

One such spectacle was spotted in the USA.

It went viral after being posted to content-sharing site Reddit.

Viewers believed that a magical road had been unearthed.

In the photo is a road like no other.

The tarmac stretches far into the distance but the end cannot be seen.

The road simply disappears into the ether.

To the right of the road is nothing but white.

The blue of the sky can be seen above the road but that too melts into white.

The left-hand side of the road seems to depict grass but also blurs into white nothingness in the distance.

What could be happening here?

The Reddit user who posted the shot captioned it: “Is This The Road to Heaven?”

“It’s the ‘Highway to Heaven’. Scroll back and Michael Landon is hitchhiking,” another user quipped.

Another wrote, rather morbidly: “Any road can be the road to heaven if you take off your seatbelt and drive very fast.”

However, one eagle-eyed user investigated the location and the reason for the mysterious scene.

If one visits the spot on Street View it becomes clear the white is due to snow on either side of the road.

Perhaps a technological glitch lent the scene such an unearthly quality.

“The cam has a problem with the white balance,” one Redditor offered.

“Pretty much confirms that this is in fact, heaven,” one viewer wrote after a link to the Street View location was shared.

One person didn’t even realise the road was a road so confusing was the shot.

“I definitely thought this was the roof of a house for a minute,” they wrote.
