Boris Johnson has issued a crucial update on lockdown rules in England, confirming plans to ease most remaining measures on July 19 are on track. However, further clarity on the resumption of international travel is expected in due course.

Many Brits were delighted when international travel was allowed to resume earlier this year.

However, in the months to follow, the traffic light system has caused problems for many people hoping for a holiday this year.

Under the current system, people can travel to green list countries for non-essential reasons and they are not required to self-isolate upon their return to England.

Anyone who travels to an amber list country is required to self-isolate for 10 days upon arriving back, or alternatively, they can pay for a private Covid test under the Test to Release scheme.

People are not advised to travel to red list countries, but if they do, they must quarantine in a managed hotel at their own expense.

The rate for one adult in one room for 10 days (11 nights) will cost the person travelling £1,750, with extra amounts added on for other adults or children travelling too.

At the moment, the rules are standard for all travellers arriving back in England, regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not.

But in the last few weeks, there have been discussions about allowing fully-vaccinated Brits to avoid self-isolation when returning from amber list countries.

When will the next announcement be?

The Government is reviewing the travel lists every three weeks, so the next announcement should come on Thursday, July 15.

Later this week, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to give an update on the future of the rules regarding international travel.

Mr Shapps is expected to address plans to remove the need for fully-vaccinated arrivals from amber list countries to self-isolate.

An exact day this week for Mr Shapps update has not been confirmed, however, updates on travel are usually issued on a Thursday.

Which countries could be added to the green list?

France and Italy are reporting low infection rates and increasing vaccination figures, so there could be an argument to add these countries to the green list.
