Budget airlines and economy seats mean that leg room can be in short supply onboard a flight. However, travel blogger Kimmie Conner has a solution that promises to boost the potential space you have around your seat. The key, according to Kimmie, is to make sure you strategically pack your hand luggage.

She shared the hack on her TikTok page @kimmconn with her audience of 152K followers, saying: “This has made flights so much better”.

Many passengers choose to place their hand luggage under the seat in front of them so they don’t need to get up and down to retrieve personal items during the flight.

However, Kimmie instead recommends packing any items you may need in a smaller bag and concealing this within your main carry-on item.

She explained: “Pack a smaller tote bag in your carry-on only with essential items for your flight such as chargers, headphones, face mask if you’ll sleep, wallet, chapstick, pen for immigration papers, books, etcetera.

“Put it back in your carry-on to board along with anything else not needed during the flight.

“When you get to your seat quickly remove the bag along with larger items such as your computer.

“Store your big bag and personal items [in the overhead locker].

“Place your bag of only explicitly needed items under the seat and enjoy leg room unhindered by a massive bag.

“After the flight get your big bag and take a minute to put your items back in while everyone is waiting to get off the plane. Voila.” [SIC]

How to fit more into your hand luggage

Most airlines enforce some form of hand luggage restriction, be that specific measurements which your bag can not go beyond or weight limits on luggage.

However, there are some handy packing methods which can help you to make the most of the allowance you have.

Speaking previously to Express.co.uk, Adam Ewart, CEO and founder of Send My Bag, recommended either “rolling” or “bundling” your clothes.

Mr Ewart explained: “Rolling is a space saver and rolling in order of use makes a lot of sense.

“But if you want to save space, pack items in order, and save wrinkles, you can also try the bundle technique.

“This works by using a fixed-sized object, like an organiser pouch that you can fill with soft items.

“The pouch can act as a ‘pillow’ that you will wrap your clothes around.”

The luggage expert went on to explain how passengers can make the most of every single bit of space within their cabin bags.

He said: “Don’t let items such as shoes kill space, put socks inside shoes and make sure any other items with voids are not left empty.

“Always roll, you can even use your socks at either end to save space and hold the rolls together.”
