Hidden cheap European gem to retire for under £800 a month
With the cost of living crisis affecting many Britons, retirees may be tempted to up sticks and head to the continent in search of a cheaper way of life.
The average UK retirement pot is currently around £1,564 per month according to GOV.UK, and thankfully many cities in Europe have average monthly costs of less than £1,000 per person including rent.
One particularly underrated and inexpensive destination for retirees is Brasov, a city located in Romania’s Transylvania region.
A single person’s monthly costs in Brasov are estimated at 2,869.7lei (£503.58), with a one-bedroom apartment outside of the city centre costing around 1,650.79 lei (£289.68) a month on average.
Taking the total average monthly cost for an individual living in Brasov to 4520.44 (£793.26).

Featuring its own Hollywood-esque sign, Brasov is surrounded by the stunning Southern Carpathian Mountains, and is well-known for its varied architecture ranging from Gothic to Baroque.
Inhabited since 100 BC and officially founded under its current name in 1211, it is a city steeped in history.
The Black Church, Old Town Hall and Saxon defensive fortifications will invoke a sense of nostalgia for days gone by.

Brasov is located just over a 30 minute drive away from Bran Castle – the iconic inspiration for the setting of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
It is also within driving distance of Romania’s capital city, Bucharest (two hours), and to the beach (four hours).
Due to its stunning natural surroundings, Brasov is far less polluted than many big cities with generally good levels of air quality.
There is also a large and welcoming expat community in the city, which in turn helps you connect to locals and forge friendships and relationships making you feel right at home.
If you are willing to sacrifice colder winters in favour of warmer summers then the Brasov climate will not be an issue for you – just remember to pack a coat and a scarf.
Another “astonishing place” with great value food and drinks is Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, which was recently named Europe’s cheapest city for British expats.
