Holidays have been sorely missed by countless Britons over the past year after the Covid pandemic robbed them of their jollies. With international travel to resume May 17 at the earliest, is it safe to book a holiday for 2021? Expert Simon Calder shared his travel advice with BBC viewers this morning.

Calder explained that Britons could safely go ahead and book a package holiday this year.

The holiday type is the safest to go for due to the level of protection such getaways offer.

The expert said: “There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t book a proper package holiday right now.

“If you do you will know you will get the holiday you richly deserve or you will get all of your money back.”

He also recommended booking with a travel agent to make sure your trip is as secure as it can be.

What’s more, these experts can also share with you any advice needed and tackle any concerns you have.

“Yvette Cooper said this morning it is too early to book but it certainly isn’t if you are just booking through a proper travel agent,” said Calder.

“If you’re booking any kind of travel product just make sure you know what the conditions are if that trip can’t go ahead.”

Many companies are letting holidaymakers change their plans for free or request a refund if they don’t wish to travel.

“There are lots and lots of travel providers here in the UK who will also give you an offer saying, ‘Well if you don’t want to go we will give you your money back,'” he said.

However, Calder warned this is “under certain conditions so you need to be very careful with that.”

Many Britons may well choose to avoid international travel and opt for UK breaks instead.

“There is going to be a huge demand for places around England at the moment,” Calder said.

He said the main way to get more bang for your buck is to be flexible.

“It is all about timing, of course, if you don’t have to go on holiday during the school holidays then please don’t,” he said.

“One top provider is selling holidays from April 12 which coincides with the last week fo the Easter holidays.

“Trips are about £13,00, you go the following week exactly the same trip for about £500.”

Calder further advised Britons to double-check the Covid policy of their holiday provider.

“Please make sure you are booking through a trusted firm,” warned the expert.

“Make sure you know what those cancellation conditions are and, of course, shop around.”
