Home Alone fans can now rent the iconic house – and it still has booby traps
The Home Alone house must be one of the most recognisable homes on TV – especially with everyone watching it at the moment to get in the Christmas spirit.
But how would you like to stay there yourself rather than just watch it on the screen?
Well now you can, as the real-life Home Alone house will soon be available to rent on Airbnb.
As well as that, you can also meet one of the star's of the iconic film as the listing reveals Kevin's older brother Buzz McCallister is the 'host'.
Buzz writes: "You may not remember me as particularly accommodating, but I’ve grown up, and I’d be happy to share my family home – my pizza, even – with you this holiday season.
"Just try not to let my tarantula, Axl, loose this time.
"We may all be older and wiser now, but we’re never too old for holiday hijinks. So, this year, spend the holidays not-so-home-alone at my parents’ house.
"This holiday season, we’re playing by my little bro’s rules, so feel free to eat junk food, watch rubbish on TV, borrow my dad’s aftershave and choose your own adventure with a legendary battle plan as a guide. Just stay out of my room, okay?"
The privately owned property is located at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, a 30-minute drive from Chicago, Illinois – where the film was set.
The stay will begin when guests walking into the 'cosy holiday scene with twinkling lights and a perfectly trimmed tree in celebration of the season'.
Airbnb says guests can 'let their inner eight-year-olds run free for the evening without the interruption of pesky intruders'.
According to the listing, there will be 'booby traps galore' – which guests will have the chance to set up themselves.
Fans will even be able to recreate the moment Kevin McCallister applies his father's aftershave – and then screams into the mirror.
For food, visitors can tuck into 'all the ‘90s favourites their hearts' desire', from Chicago’s finest pizza to a candlelit dinner of microwavable Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.
There is also a meet and greet with a real-life tarantula, much like Buzz's pet Axl.
Guests will also be able to enjoy a screening of the 2021 Disney+ remake of the classic – 'Home Sweet Alone' – which stars Ellie Kemper, Archie Yates and original Buzz actor Devin Ratray.
Finally, visitors will be receive a Lego Ideas Home Alone set to build at home as a memento of their stay.
The home is available for a one-night stay for up to four guests on December 12 for $25 (£19).
To honour the new rental, Airbnb will make a one-time donation to La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
The property was handpicked by the production team behind the 1990 film, which starred Macaulay Culkin.
He played youngster Kevin Mcallister, who is seen battling a pair of burglars when his parents jet off to spend Christmas in Paris – and accidentally leave him behind.
Fancy Pants Homes says the property, which was originally built in the 1920s, was owned by John and Cynthia Abendshien at the time the film was made.
The couple told the Chicago Sun-Times that they camped out in the four-room master suite during the six months that the movie was being shot, while the rest of their home was used for filming.
The couple paid $875,000 (£659,000)for the 4,250-square-foot redbrick home back in 1988, according to Curbed.
They then later listed it for $2.4million (£1.8million) in 2011, but received far less than the asking price.
The home was sold for $1.58million (£1.2million) nearly 10 months later in 2012.
The fact that the home has been a tourist attraction ever since the film was released may have been a reason why the home didn't attract its asking price.
Residents in the North Shore neighbourhood have been dealing with tourists visiting and taking pictures of the home for the past 31 years.
The exterior of the property featured in the film, as did the kitchen and the attic – where Kevin was sent to spend the night in the opening scenes. The first-floor landing, main staircase and basement also featured.
However, a replica of the house interior was built in the gym of the nearby New Trier Township High School, as the house was too small to have room for the crew for certain scenes.
Fans can request to book the property from Tuesday, December 7, at airbnb.com/homealone.
