‘I flew to Budapest for an epic spa day – and it cost me less than £40’
We Brits all love a holiday from jetting off abroad to camping in the countryside. Unfortunately, the cost-of-living crisis means most of us are cutting back on spending.
But, it seems creative bargain hunters are still finding ways to travel without breaking the bank. We found a flight to Portugal for just £12 that worked a treat and it looks like lots of people are doing the same.
One bloke has explained how he snagged himself a spa day in Budapest, Hungary, for less than £40. A spa day in the UK can cost upwards of £50 ranging anywhere up to £500 and that’s without considering train or petrol fare.

Money-saving Brit Callum Ryan, 22, found a flight from London Luton for only £17 to the popular city. When his plane landed, he went straight to the famous Szechenyi Baths which are known for their nighttime spa parties.
The medicinal bath is supplied with water from thermal springs – it’s renowned as one of the largest spa baths in Europe. Szechenyi Baths has 15 indoor baths and three huge outdoor pools.
On top of swimming you can get stuck into the spa’s 10 saunas and steam rooms or enjoy a massage, facial, mud treatment or jet massage. Callum spent just over £22.12 (9400 Hungarian forints) on a ticket to the spa having made his 900-mile journey from Milton Keynes.
He decided to jet off after visiting Budapest with friends and falling in love with the city. He said: "I have been with my friends before and I had a pleasant time there. So I thought it would be great to go back and experience it again.
"I went early in the morning as the spa can get really busy. I did forget to bring a towel with me – so I had to drip dry but other than that it would have been alright."
Callum flew to Budapest with Wizz Air on April 17 and stayed until the next day when he jet back home. There’s plenty more to do in Budapest while you’re there too – from the highly rated Hungarian Parliament building to the state opera.
You can generally find flights to Budapest fairly cheaply – especially using our favourite Google Flights hack. Ryanair has a flight from London Stansted to Budapest on June 20 for just £22.
It’s not the first time Callum has made such a journey. Callum Ryan headed off to the Spanish island of Ibiza earlier this year and swigged a pint, all as part of a TikTok challenge.
He wanted to see if he could fly to the party island for a drink cheaper than the cost of a crate of beer here in the UK. The lad headed over to the supermarket where he spotted 12 cans of Estrella for £15 – and set that as his budget.
Callum found a last minute flight for just £10 from London and landed on the island for less than the cost of many UK train tickets. He also ordered a pint for £3.22.
He's also previously flown to Italy to eat pizza for less than the cost of a Dominos in the UK. Callum Ryan managed to jet off to Milan and buy a pizza for just £17.73 – he calculated that it was £2.27 cheaper than ordering pizza delivered to his home
