‘I quit my job to work on yachts – and now get paid to travel the world’

Plenty of Brits are sick of they 9-5 jobs and wish they could quit to travel the world – but it happens to be pretty expensive.

However, it seems it’s not impossible as one TikTok creator has done just that by finding a new industry.

Liberty, who posts content on the video sharing sit, @travelwithliberty, left her job to work on yachts in tropical locations as a bosun.

The “yachtie” has now been cruising around the world for four years and seems to be living the life!

She recently posted about the pros and cons of working at sea, reports the Sun.

Liberty claimed that the biggest plus about the dream role is the money.

She noted: “It’s a great way to save, you don’t have any overheads, you don’t pay rent, you don’t pay any bills, you have a toiletry cupboard that’s fully stocked that you can just help yourself to.”

She added that the travel was an obvious bonus – and the main thing that attracts people to the yachtie lifestyle. In fact, she's been able to visit places she didn't even know existed!

Other perks have included working outside, and meeting new people – some of whom she has now formed strong friendships with.

It's not all glamour though – Liberty admitted that you can often end up working long hours, with long periods of time where you can't take days off.

But, there are definitely some negatives to working aboard a yacht.

Liberty said: “You work long hours and you can often work for long periods of time with no days off.

“Secondly, you are in a confined space with lots of other people, and if you’re having a bad day then the smallest thing can tick you off.”

However, she has highlighted that life onboard is very different to what's portrayed on hit TV show Below Deck, which often leaves Brits wishing they worked on yachts.

She said: “Firstly, everyone on the show is super power hungry. That doesn’t happen. Everyone knows everyone’s job titles and respects them.

“Secondly, apparently the boat magically runs without any engineers – you never see them, you never hear about them but they’re very important.”

And, Liberty noted that the crew usually arrive the day before the charter and prep the boat within one day.

She said: “On charter boats you can have a really short turn around period, but it’s unheard of really that you have a crew that’s brand new getting the boat ready that quickly.

“All yachts need maintenance and that’s just not shown on the show.”

For those who are considering a career change, she flagged the “longevity” of the role. She said it’s best to stay on each yacht for around a year and take on a junior role, taking on every job and being as helpful as possible. Her biggest tip? Make sure you have good manners and “respect the ranks”.

In another video, Liberty compared life on the boat with that of TV show “Below Deck”.
