‘I visited one of Europe’s prettiest winter cities and it was so beautiful’

Planning a winter holiday? While capital cities such as Berlin, Paris or Copenhagen are all popular options, there are a few lesser-known spots that are incredibly beautiful.

I visited Gothenburg, one of Sweden’s biggest cities, during the winter season and found there was so much to do.

Gothenburg’s canal system calls to mind Dutch cities and the city has a chilled atmosphere with plenty of cultural hotspots.

It’s also home to Liseberg, one of Scandinavia’s most-visited amusement parks, which hosts events all year round.

So what’s there to do in Gothenburg?

Winter isn’t usually the best time of year to visit a garden but Gothenburg’s Palmhuset is lovely whatever the weather.

Despite it being little more than 0 degrees outside when I visited, the Palmhuset was warm and packed with a huge range of plants and flowers.

Gothenburg has a buzzing cultural scene and I loved the city’s Konstmuseum art gallery. The gallery has a mix of works, ranging from Picasso and Van Gogh to contemporary artists.

It costs 65 SEK (£4.95) to enter and it’s the ideal spot to while away a rainy winter afternoon in Gothenburg.

If you’re visiting before Christmas, make sure to sample a saffron bun at one of Gothenburg’s cafes in the pretty Haga district. The buns are made to celebrate the festival of St Lucia in Sweden.

As I only visited Gothenburg for the day, I didn’t have time to visit Liseberg but the amusement park has a huge Christmas celebration which children will love.

Flights to Gothenburg take around two hours from the UK or tourists could combine their trip with a visit to Stockholm. The train takes around three and a half hours.
