‘I was refused to swap flights with a mum and toddler on a flight’
A man took to the internet to complain it was “not (his) problem they didn’t book together” when asked to swap for a mother and child on a flight. He shared his anger on Reddit, in a forum called Mildly Infuriating.
The furious traveller’s forum post has resurfaced and gone viral after he complained about “the audacity” of a mother who asked him to swap seats on an airplane so she could sit next to her toddler.
The man was on a transpacific flight taking off from Japan and was sitting in a bulkhead window seat on the airplane. A woman asked him to swap seats with her so she could sit next to her toddler-aged daughter, who was sitting next to the man in a middle seat.
In the post, the man said he refused to swap seats and was annoyed that the mum expected him to swap for an “inferior” middle seat, as the woman was sitting directly behind her daughter next row.
He wrote: “She asked me – and just me – to switch seats with her so she could have my window seat (next to her daughter) and I’d take her middle seat a row back.” The man said his internal response was “Hell to the f**l no.”
The man added that he was also annoyed that there were multiple people around them whom the mother could have asked to swap seats with. He wrote: “Worse is we were surrounded by others from her tour group that she could’ve asked for a three-way trade instead. Or the tour operator.”
He then wrote: “The audacity to ask just me and expect an inferior trade on my side.”
The man’s post has caused some debate in the comment section of the forum as users were divided on what the proper flight etiquette should be in such a situation.

One commentator wrote: “I mean, you’re under no obligation, but if I’m swapping an aisle for an aisle one row away so a frazzled parent can sit next to their kid, that feels like a very easy act of ‘reasonable human compassion’ to me.”
The man responded to the commentator and said he felt like a “total scam was being run of me”. He seems to intricate that he believed the mother wished for a better seat rather than wanting to just to be near her child.
He added that he always refuses to switch seats on a flight under any circumstances unless it was for a flight upgrade.
He wrote: “I’m sick of entitlement from people, and it seems elevated on planes and even more so of late. I don’t know you. I don’t generally care about you…and I am certainly not responsible for your poor planning. Don’t talk to me again and go away.”
One person, who said they were a “parent of a toddler” was surprised someone would wish to sit next to “someone else’s unaccompanied toddler” instead of moving to a different seat. The parent added: “Sure, someone else could move, but either [way] someone has to move or someone has to sit next to a flying toddler.”
The parent said it was “dumb” that the man was so “infuriated” at a mother for “trying to watch their own kid.” The parent added: “I honestly don’t know which is more annoying for other passengers.”
Other commentators in the post were curious about what the flight was like for the man sitting next to a toddler.
The man responded and wrote: “The combination of a sleeping pill and the fact that she was very well-behaved made it a very pleasant trip. The mother made a nuisance of herself a bit, likely as punishment for me not moving. But once the pill kicked in it was smooth sailing.”
