‘I’m a flight attendant – economy’s cleanest seat also has the best leg room’

Those of us who can’t afford to fly business class are often looking for ways to make our journey more comfortable. Economy seats can be cramped and some don’t even recline – a nightmare when flying long-haul.

However, it seems that some clever choices when it comes to your seat selection could improve your experience. Flight attendants claim that there is one seat on the plane that’s not only the most comfortable, but the cleanest too.

While you may have to spend a few extra quid to snag it, it’s far less than you would pay for an upgrade, and when booking you should snap up as soon as possible if you spot it, claim the crew.

On Reddit, a flight attendant showed why the seat by the emergency exit is the best. The spot is part of an unusual configuration likely for the emergency exit, so while your TV screen might be quite far away you’ll be able to stretch out and relax for your whole journey.

They wrote: "This seat is the best on the aircraft. It’s also probably one of the cleanest because kids can’t sit there."

To prove their point, they shared a photo of their legs fully stretched out in the seat, just like you would be able to in a business class suite.

The traveller also popped a blanket over themselves and showed that there was still lots of room in front of their feet even with their legs straight. The unusual seat is in economy, but has no seat in front of it.

It’s likely that children are not allowed to sit in the seat because it is an access way to an emergency exit or hatch. In the same way, kids aren’t allowed on the extra legroom seats as they cannot assist the crew in case of an emergency.

Children are typically more likely to drop food, stuff things into the seat pocket and even wipe their nose on the chair so an adults-only seat is a cleaner option. So, if you’re worried about hygiene it’s the one for you.

If you’re wondering about the best seats to choose for children another flight attendant explained where it’s best for them to sit. Laura Hannah, from Ayrshire, who has been working with Emirates for more than six years.

She said: "Choose your seats wisely – if you can, always book your baby a bassinet, or choose bulkhead seats. It’s worth considering sitting closer to the toilets, making trips with kids a lot more convenient."

Laura also added that it’s wise to book children’s meals for kids under 12 as they’re likely to be more suitable for their tastes. You can also get baby meals and access to milk warming services.
