Melissa revealed that upon arrival she first ensures that the filters in the air conditioning unit are clean before investigating the mattress for bedbugs.
She also always ditches the top sheet on the bed and tells viewers: ‘I’m sorry to tell you they do not get washed every time someone stays in a hotel.’
Some people initially quizzed the hotel pro about how to check for bed bugs and in a follow up video, she set out step-by-step instructions.
She explains: ‘Don’t put anything on the bed until you’ve checked it because if you do have anything, they can and they will get on your luggage and your clothes and then they get distributed back home with you which is not what you want.
‘Check the mattress, the pillows and behind the baseboard, especially if it has one of those fabric ones.
‘If there’s a heavy infestation, once you pull back the comforter you’ll actually see them on the sheets especially if they’re a light color.’
Melissa reveals that the crevice around the piping on the mattress is where bedbugs ‘like to hang out, so pull this up and use your flashlight on your phone.’
She continues: ‘You can also flip the mattress up, check the other side. If there’s a box spring on the bed, also check that.’

Melissa says she prefers paper cups that are individually wrapped in plastic over ‘glass glasses,’ while the piping on mattresses is where bed bugs like to hang out
She also states that she ‘will not use an ice bucket’ as ‘people use these for things you don’t even want to think about’
If you are at a hotel and you do find bed bugs, Melissa advises asking to be relocated to ‘another room on the opposite end of the building’ and ‘just because there’s some in one room it does not mean that it’s gonna be in all of them.’
Continuing on the cleanliness crusade, Melissa says that she prefers paper cups that are individually wrapped in plastic over ‘glass glasses,’ as these are often not washed properly.
She also states that she ‘will not use an ice bucket’ as ‘people use these for things you don’t even want to think about.’
The expert goes on to reveal that she has ‘cleaned out puke from them.’ If she needs ice, Melissa says she will use plastic cups to collect cubes from the dispenser.
Commenters went on to share their own horror stories around hotel ice buckets.

While another added: ‘I had a guest poo in one ice bucket… we threw it away.’
In yet another TikTok, Melissa focuses on hotel breakfasts and she gives examples as she navigates a morning buffet.
While showing viewers footage of her hotel spread, she reveals that the dark color of the scrambled eggs indicated that they had been there a while.

She also said the bread buns were stale as they had not been individually wrapped, the milk was warm as it had been left out in a jug and the cereal dispensers looked like they hadn’t been washed in a while which were things that all guests should look out for.
