According to research from Workthere, Edinburgh is one of the UK’s most pedestrian-friendly cities with one in six workers commuting to work on foot.
On average, Edinburgh’s residents are just 308m from the nearest green space and the city has much better air quality than London. It’s also a great destination to explore by bike, with over 2,000 cycle routes to try in the Scottish capital.

Although the city’s old town is very pedestrian friendly, tourists will have to prepare themselves for hills as many of the streets are on an incline.

When it comes to green spaces, tourists will be spoilt for choice in Edinburgh. Holyrood Park is home to Arthur’s Seat, the city’s extinct volcano. The walk to the top is very steep but tourists will be rewarded with incredible city views.
Princes Street Gardens are easy to access from the city’s old town and are a wonderful place to admire Edinburgh Castle from.
Tourists looking to escape the city centre might prefer to stroll along the Water of Leith, surrounded by natural scenery.
