Jet2 becomes first major airline to scrap mandatory in-flight face masks

Passengers flying with Jet2 will no longer be required to wear face masks for the duration as the airline is the first major carrier to scrap the Covid rule.

In a huge regulations change yesterday, Jet2 wrote on its website that masks will no longer be mandatory on flights from England and Northern Ireland.

The news broke after the government cancelled all Coronavirus pandemic regulations including masks on public transport.

You’ll still need to don a mask when you land if the local laws state you must have a face covering, but you can go without when boarding and in-flight.

While the government has changed the rules in the UK most airlines are still insisting that passengers wear a mask in order to fly – and Jet2 still advises flyers to do so, but it will no longer be enforced.

A Jet2 spokesman said: “It is no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask in England and Northern Ireland, including at our airports or on board our aircraft.

“However, as per UK Government guidance, we recommend that customers continue to wear a face mask in these spaces, and we remind customers that they will need to wear one when they get to their overseas destination.”

The rule change only applies to flights from England and Northern Ireland.

Any flights leaving or arriving in Scotland and Wales will still require masks to be worn for the duration of travel.

Face coverings are also mandatory on other airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways (BA), Virgin Atlantic, Loganair and TUI.

Jet2 operates entirely within Europe, reports the Mirror, which means it doesn't have to factor in as many changing local regulations and infection rates as long-haul carriers who fly to destinations all over the globe.
