Lake District more popular than Cornwall ahead of ‘record-breaking year’ for staycations

International travel continues to be uncertain this year and many countries still have restrictions in place. Britons are again looking at the UK for their holidays this year, with UK travel company Independent Cottages predicting 2022 to be a record-breaking year.
A UK holiday is on the cards for many Britons this year.
Independent Cottages has witnessed a 170 percent increase in website traffic between December 28 and January 9.
During the same period, the company also reported a 200 percent increase in booking inquiries, compared to last year.
Surprisingly, most enquiries were for bookings up to April, with Britons embracing the UK for a late winter and early spring holiday.
Summer was also popular, with 30 percent of enquiries for the traditional summer holidays.
Last year, the summer of staycation saw some popular areas book up, with Cornwall even asking holidaymakers to stay away.
This year, however, the Lake District is so far twice as popular as Cornwall.
The most popular destination for Britons this year could be the Northwest English National Park, with Cornwall only accounting for four percent of holidays booked this year so far.
It is early days still, and Cornwall will no doubt start booking up soon.
By February last year, Independent Cottages had 60 percent of their Cornwall holiday homes booked for the summer.
Cornwall currently didn’t make the top three, with the Lake District, Peak District and the Cotswolds more popular.
Steve Jarvis, Co-Founder of Independent Cottages said: “Last summer saw huge demand for UK holidays, with demand often far exceeding supply, and everyone that I speak to in the industry agrees that 2022 will be another busy year.
“However, some holidaymakers are likely to face the same availability problems as last year if they leave it too late to book.
“Prior to Coronavirus, the booking trend for UK holidays was becoming more and more last minute, but this has changed and people are booking their UK holidays well in advance.
“This is partially due to UK holidays being the only option for many during 2020/21 but also because a lot of people have since been impacted and disappointed by cancelled foreign holidays due to variants such as Omicron.”
Britons are not taking any chances with their holidays this year, with the company seeing an increase of bookings for as far back as Christmas 2022.
There are many beautiful areas to discover and Britons are planning to spend another year exploring the UK.
The possibility of jetting off overseas this summer is still not certain with countries changing their travel requirements quickly.
France’s ban on Britons before the Christmas holidays saw many holidaymakers scramble to book somewhere else or to cancel their trip altogether.
The country has still not reopened to tourism from the UK.
