Lesser-known winter sun island has white sand beaches and 28C December weather
A gorgeous tropical island is an up-and-coming travel destination for Brits wanting some winter sun – but you might never have heard of it. According to a recent study, almost a fifth of Brits wish they could escape the UK winters for several weeks in the sunshine and you could do just that at Saint Martin Island.
The stunning island, part of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea, reaches a balmy 28C on average each winter. Google Search stats show it’s growing in popularity too as it’s been looked up 2,174,580 times – and it’s easy to see why.
Saint Martin Island is east of Puerto Rico and boasts busy resort beaches, secluded but beautiful coves, golden sand and seawater that’s so turquoise it doesn’t seem real. It’s also known for having a vibrant nightlife perfect for those who like to go out, dine, drink and party.

Kate Kalamaga, Founder, and owner of Tropicalboat claims the island is one of Britain’s most up-and-coming destinations. She said: "Saint Martin is a true aquatic paradise, beckoning all water enthusiasts to its stunning shores. This island is renowned for its collection of 37 picturesque beaches, each graced with powdery white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It's an ideal haven for those who cherish sailing, offering an excellent spot to drop anchor and test your seafaring skills in the boundless expanse of the open sea.
"As the hurricane season concludes in November, the winds shift to a southeasterly direction, typically blowing at a gentle 10 to 15 knots. This transition makes it the perfect window of opportunity for a sailing adventure."
The island also has plenty of natural beauty in the form of salt ponds and forest-covered hills as well as the ever-popular beaches where snorkelling and waterspouts can be enjoyed. The island even has some nude beaches for those who prefer to go skinny dipping.
But, it’s not just the natural beauty that tempts holidaymakers to the island. The capital city, Marigot, once a small fishing village is now full of bistros and cafes as well as pretty, colourful buildings to admire.
The town also has booming markets, attractive promenades and plenty of shopping for those who like retail therapy. The sprawling Marigot market sells fresh fruit, vegetables, spices and traditional dishes like Colombo (a curried fish stew).
You can also purchase sweet local rums, buy gifts and souvenirs or splash the cash on luxury brands around the town on its beautifully arranged shopping streets.
History buffs will be able to explore a number of important spots including Fort Louis which was built to defend the town from pirates during its time exporting rum, salt, sugar cane and coffee. The island was a part of the slave trade and this is demonstrated in its sights, museums and exhibitions.
You can also visit the island's original prison which was transformed into a fire station in 1968. Alternatively, you can get stuck into Spring Sugar Mill, the Hope Estate Archaeological Site and the National Nature Reserve of Saint Martin.
Wine and culinary tours, bar hopping, jet ski tours, rum tasting and gondola tours are also on offer on the island and through TUI. You can even book to have a romantic private picnic on the beach. According to Skyscanner flights start from £547 for a return.
