Just in time for half-term, Spain has ditched its strict Covid travel rules. From October 21, British tourists can enter without showing a test result or vaccination record.
The UK Government said: “From October 21, 2022, all Covid travel restrictions for travellers to Spain have been lifted.
“The rules that previously applied to travellers coming to Spain no longer apply:
- you are no longer required to show proof of being fully vaccinated
- you are no longer required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test
- you are no longer required to show proof of having recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months.
- you are no longer required to complete a health control form prior to travel.”
Spain is one of the UK’s top holiday destinations and the news will be welcomed by many British tourists.
Donal Kane, a travel restrictions expert, tweeted: “Finally, silly situation where they removed enforcement but you had to comply with the rules that they ‘might’ check has ended.”
Travel expert Simon Calder, tweeted: “Spain drops all Covid rules. Requirement for jab or test will be abandoned.”
Many other European countries had already dropped their Covid entry requirements making travel much simpler for Britons.
Restrictions still remain around the world, with countries such as the USA requiring tourists to be double vaccinated.
Tourists are still required to wear face masks on public transport, in pharmacies, medical centres and care homes.
Hospitality venues may have their own Covid restrictions in place such as social distancing or mandatory hand sanitiser.
The news marks the end of a challenging period of travel to Spain where tourists were repeatedly impacted by strict rules.
In July 2020, the British Government introduced a mandatory quarantine for travellers to Spain at short notice.
Some families lost out when Spain made vaccination mandatory for teenagers, who had not been offered the jab yet in the UK.
Any unvaccinated British tourists who have already booked Covid tests for a holiday in Spain are not entitled to a refund but may be offered one.
Rebecca Halpern tweeted: “At last! Was wary about booking for next year until everything dropped.”
Sarah Millard tweeted: “Just in time for half term, shame most travellers who bought tests will have already bought them.”
Many tourists had said that authorities hadn’t checked their documents when they landed in Spain in recent weeks.
