In his most recent Money Saving Expert (MSE) newsletter Martin Lewis shared his “best bets” for holiday hungry Britons eager to get away this summer. While the current “green list” currently only included 12 destinations, the Government has said it will review this list “every three weeks”.

While Martin points out is impossible to “predict future green destinations” there are some locations that are likely to “fare better”.

The crucial factors in whether or not a country will make it onto the “green list” are “vaccinations, infection rates, variant prevalence, and how reliable the scientific data is.”

As a result, Martin says “developed countries” the ones to look at when considering a future holiday.

The USA and Europe were the two main locations he recommended initially hunting for a holiday.

“It’s likely developed countries will fare better, as they are ahead in the vaccination timetable, which will hopefully feed into other factors too,” the said.

Though he did further warn unexpected “variants can happen anywhere.”

The key to reducing the risk of a cancelled holiday is to do your research in advance and stay up-to-date on the latest travel restrictions both at home and in the destination.

Martin added: “If you’re booking for future months, the World Health Organisation’s country vaccinations stats gives a decent, but not foolproof, view.”

While holidays are set to resume from the UK as of May 17, the government has said it walnut hesitate to reimpose sudden restrictions if it becomes necessary.

Furthermore, while the Covid situation may be under control in the UK, every nation is fighting a separate battle.

As a result, some countries may stop travel or tighten borders if figures suddenly increase.

This also means countries on the “green list” could be placed onto the “watch list” or moved to “amber” or “red”.

Luckily, many travel firms are now offering flexible cancellation and rebooking policies.

What’s more some holiday providers, such as TUI, have vowed not to fly Britons to “red list” countries.

According to Martin, this is why it is vital customers read the terms and conditions of a holiday before booking anything.

“As travel insurance won’t protect you for Covid cancellations, bookings with flexibility are key,” said Martin.

“Look for those that let you easily change your mind or the date, or cancel.”

Package holidays are also a safe bet as they are covered by the Package Travel Regulations.

According to this law, holidaymakers are entitled to a refund if the travel agent, airline, hotel or any other business operating part of all of the package holiday goes bust.

The coverage also kicks in if a destination shuts its borders to Britons, or the holiday is not executed as advertised.
