Michelle Obama Is Launching a Kids Cooking Show That Will Travel to Restaurants, Homes, and Farms All Over the World
During her time as first lady, Michelle Obama relentlessly advocated for healthy eating. Her "Let's Move!" campaign targeted childhood obesity, she planted a vegetable garden at the White House, and she published the book "American Grown." Now, she's bringing that passion for promoting good food to a Netflix series.
Debuting on March 16, Waffles + Mochi will feature Obama alongside a cast of puppets, Sesame Street-style, for 10 20-minute episodes, where they'll be joined by other human guests, including renowned chefs, home cooks, kids, and celebrities.
The two eponymous puppet leads — Waffles and Mochi — are billed as best friends and aspiring chefs from The Land of Frozen Food. "When these two taste-buddies are suddenly hired as the freshest employees of a whimsical supermarket, they're ready for the culinary adventure of a lifetime," Netflix explains. "With the help of friendly new faces like the supermarket owner, Mrs. Obama, and a magical flying shopping cart as their guide, Waffles and Mochi blast off on global ingredient missions, traveling to kitchens, restaurants, farms, and homes all over the world, cooking up recipes with everyday ingredients."
"Whether they're picking potatoes in the Andes of Peru, sampling spices in Italy, or making miso in Japan, these curious explorers uncover the wonder of food and discover every meal is a chance to make new friends," the official synopsis continues. "Waffles + Mochi is an exciting invitation to get kids and grown-ups cooking together in the kitchen and connecting to cultures around the globe."
For her part, Obama took to Twitter to say that she was "beyond thrilled" about the new show. "I'm excited for families and children everywhere to join us on our adventures as we discover, cook, and eat delicious food from all over the world," she posted. "I'm also excited to work with [Partnership for a Healthier America] to help kids build healthy habits and help families in need cook with fresh ingredients together at home."
The show arrives courtesy of the Obamas' production company Higher Ground, which was behind "Becoming," Michelle Obama's documentary that was also distributed by Netflix last year. Fans of the former president may also be interested to know that Barack is billed as one of the executive producers alongside his wife.
