The InterNations Expat Insider City Ranking asked expats in 57 countries around the world to rate their home based on several important factors. In one category, expats were asked to vote on how they rated their personal safety and political stability in their chosen home.
While Singapore was ranked as the safest city in the world, one Italian city didn’t score well on safety.
Milan is the most dangerous city in Europe for expats according to the InterNations City rankings.
The northern Italian city is famous as a global capital of fashion and design and is also known for high-end dining and boutique shops.
However, many expats who live in Milan were concerned about their personal safety in the city.
Almost 15 percent of expats in Milan feared for their safety, high compared to the global average of just eight percent.
In 2021, the city had the highest crime rate in Italy, according to Statista. There were around 4.9 thousand crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
Shop burglaries and thefts were far more common in Milan than in any other Italian city.
Some tourists have said they have been targeted by a popular scam while on holiday in Milan.
In the scam, someone is asked to sign a petition and robbed as they are distracted while signing the sheet.
The second most dangerous city in Europe for expats was the Spanish tourist hotspot of Barcelona.
Barcelona was ranked as the eighth most dangerous city in the world for expats. The pickpocket capital of Europe has high rates of theft.
Just under 15 percent of expats said they do not feel safe in Barcelona, much higher than the global average.
One expat said they had “not felt very safe or secure in the last few years” in Barcelona.
Despite its low score, violent crime is rare in Barcelona and is generally safe to walk around the city on foot.
The most dangerous city in the world for expats was Johannesburg where over two thirds of expats feared for their personal safety.
The South African city of Cape Town was ranked as the second most dangerous city for expats.
Over 40 percent of expats were unhappy with the political stability while 43 percent worried about their personal safety in Cape Town.
Mexico City was ranked as the third most dangerous city and almost 40 percent of expats feared for their safety there.
However, expats in all the three least safe cities thought that local residents were very friendly and welcoming.
