Most desirable country for retired British expats is ‘perfect’

Although life as an expat isn’t without challenges, many Britons are attracted to retiring abroad. New research from the team at Retirement Solutions has found the most desirable destinations for Britons.

Most desirable destinations for British expats

  1. Spain
  2. Australia
  3. Portugal
  4. Thailand
  5. Canada
  6. France
  7. India
  8. New Zealand
  9. Italy
  10. Greece

Spain topped the rankings as the most desirable destination for British expats looking to retire abroad.

A spokesperson from Retirement Solutions said: “There’s plenty of places in Spain that are perfect for retirement, including Alicante which sits on the Costa Blanca.

“The city has an excellent cost of living while also providing plenty of sunshine, with temperatures sitting at around 16 degrees in winter while reaching over 40 degrees in summer.”

Spain’s Costa Blanca has a sizeable expat community with many Britons opting to live in resort towns such as Benidorm.

British expats are likely to find everyday essentials, such as groceries, cost far less on the Costa Blanca than in the UK.

Other popular destinations for retired expats include the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and the Costa del Sol.

However, some retired expats have run into problems in Spain since Brexit. Britons can only stay in Spain for 90 out of every 180 days without a visa.

This means that some retired expats choose to spend the winter months in Spain and return to the UK in the summer.

Australia came second on the list with a huge number of Britons dreaming of retiring Down Under.

The spokesperson said: “The weather in Australia is certainly a big attraction to the country, in a city like Sydney you can still expect a temperature of 17 degrees in the coldest winter months.”

However, expats looking to save money might want to consider another country. Prices in Australia are generally higher than in the UK.

Housing is also expensive and can be difficult to find in some of the most desirable areas such as Melbourne and Sydney.

Portugal came third on the list and was the second most desirable destination for retirement in Europe.

The country has a number of celebrity fans including Madonna, Princess Eugenie and Sir Cliff Richard.

Thailand came in fourth place on the list and could be an attractive option for expats looking for a cheap retirement lifestyle.

The country has a number of care homes designed for foreign residents which have incredible facilities including swimming pools.
