Before moving abroad, expats will need to decide what their priorities are and it’s a good idea to visit the potential country before putting plans in place. Sun, sea, good food and quality healthcare are often top considerations for British expats.

Topping the list in Europe for the most popular expat destination, according to MoveHub, is Spain.

Around 750,000 Brits have chosen to settle in the Mediterranean country.

The Costa del Sol is one of the best areas for British expats with many people opting to retire in Marbella and the surrounding area.

The vibrant resort offers fantastic golfing facilities, a beautiful coastline and a whole array of restaurants to choose from.

Living in Marbella is pretty simple for British expats as there are a lot of English speaking services available including doctors.

Spain is also considered to offer a cheaper way of life than the UK. Housing, food and beer is often more affordable than at home.

As the most popular expat country in Europe, Britons can expect to find a sizable community to befriend.

Further north, Alicante and the wider Costa Blanca is also a popular retirement destination for Britons. The port city has a lively nightlife scene and expansive public beaches.

House prices have recently dropped in the Alicante region so it could be a good option for retirees looking to snap up a bargain.

A little closer to home and second most popular in Europe according to MoveHub, France is another great country for British expats to retire to.

There are almost 200,000 British expats currently living in France with Ile-de-France being the most popular area.

Ile-de-France is a top cultural choice for expats as the region includes Paris and its many museums and galleries.

Expats heading to France can expect delicious gourmet food and stylish boutiques although they should expect high prices in Paris.

Portugal has become an increasingly popular destination for British expats according to William Russell and it’s not hard to see why.

Around 40,000 Britons live in the Mediterranean country with many expats choosing the Algarve to settle in.

The Algarve offers inexpensive living compared to the rest of Europe as well as a stunning coastline and soaring temperatures.

The towns of Alcoutim and Monchique in the Algarve offer the cheapest house prices while buzzing Lagos is the most expensive area to buy.

Further afield, Dubai is a wonderful choice for Britons who can handle high temperatures and an expensive lifestyle, according to William Russell.

Social clubs are extremely popular in Dubai and provide a buzzing social life for British expats.

Shopping is also world renowned in the Middle Eastern country and English is widely spoken by residents.

However, British expats looking to settle in Dubai will need to be aware of local drinking laws and other rules on behaviour in public places.
