Mum explains special family lane at UK airports that lets you skip security line

When flying with children there are lots of plates that need to keep spinning at once.

As a parent, you need to keep an eye on the kids, check the bags, keep hold of your shopping, prevent any tantrums and on and on and on.

Plus, on top of all of that there are the usual challenges – you have to get through security and make it to your gate in time to board.

Little ones and tearaway tweens can make this difficult and if the security lines are long it only adds to the stress.

Children aren’t always patient so keeping them entertained while queueing for an hour is a mega task alongside separating your liquids and getting all your bags scanned.

Luckily, removing liquids from bags could soon be a thing of the past as it won’t be required from 2024 on.

Plus, it seems there’s a secret trick that lets you skip the security line if you have children with you.

Parent Ashley, 25, from Hull, told eShores: "We were in line at Manchester Airport for over 2 hours before we realised there was a family line".

The travel experts noted: "While it’s been reported that security queues have been as long as three hours in parts of the UK this year, most airports have a dedicated family security lane. If the family lane is closed, ask to fast-track in the normal security line.

"It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a shot!"

If the fast-track line is also long it’s likely that the security gates are extremely busy and so it wouldn’t be fair on those who paid extra to use them If you skipped the line.

However, if the fast-track lane is quiet and the regular line is long they may let those with small children use it to avoid the little ones disrupting others in the queue or to help you pass to your gate more smoothly.

Birmingham Airport has a similar system in place. Its website states: "To make life a little easier for you and the kids, use our Express Lane – a separate lane through security, designed to enable passengers to pass through the security area more quickly.

"Not only will it mean less waiting around for the kids, it will also give you more time to enjoy the great selection of shops, bars and restaurants in our Departure Lounge!"

Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport has also introduced dedicated queues for families.

Its website explains: "We’ve created special Assistance and family lanes in security for departing families.

"If you’re travelling with young children in pushchairs, our dedicated lanes will give your family extra time and help to get through security.

"Simply follow the signs for the Assistance and family lanes after you've checked in."

So, if you’re travelling with young children make sure to check the rules at your airport to see if you can skip the line.
