Those who wish to drive a British car or any kind of vehicle in Spain will need to get a new “UK” sticker in order to avoid a fine, the Government has said. Where can you get it?
The new measure also applies to any other country in the EU so Britons should make sure they have it before driving abroad.
The rule comes into effect on September 28, 2021, and it applies to all British registered cars driving in the EU.
The sticker is replacing the GB magnet which was needed when driving abroad.
The UK Government stated: “If you have a GB sticker, cover or remove it.”
This is with the exception of Ireland, which does not require a sticker.
Government guidance explained: “You will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:
– a GB identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack)
– a Euro symbol
– a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
– numbers and letters only – no flag or identifier
“If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.
“If you’re in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.”
The new stickers are available online, in post offices and garages and have a cost of £1.50.
Displaying your vehicle’s country of origin is an international requirement.
When stopped by Spanish police, drivers will be issued a fine if they don’t have the new sticker.
The Government decided to change its international traffic symbol for “UK”.
Until this year, GB was the country’s international symbol for traffic.
The Government hasn’t given an official explanation for his change.
“A notification stating that the United Kingdom is changing the distinguishing sign that it had previously selected for display in international traffic on vehicles registered in the United Kingdom, from ‘GB’ to ‘UK’,” said the UN.
Although no official reasons have been outlined, this is thought to be in solidarity with Northern Ireland.
Using “UK” comprises both Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
