NSW spots surprise in Tripadvisor’s top 10 emerging destinations list
We all know that our own backyard is full of hidden gems both in the country and along the coast.
But a new international list forecasting the top emerging destinations around the world has dropped – and two spots within NSW have come at the top of the list.
The annual TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards for Destinations highlights some of the booking platform’s most popular places around the world as voted by the website’s users.
One of the categories, dubbed the ‘Emerging Destinations’ list, is based on places that saw the biggest increase in “saves” on TripAdvisor.

“These are the destinations travellers were dreaming of while they were stuck at home all year – and where they may go next,” the list read.
Curating a list of 10 destinations, two Aussie spots – one in the country, and one on the coastline – came out close to the top.
Shoalhaven on the NSW south coast was the eighth rated destination for the category, and the highest contender from Australia.
It was followed by Mudgee in the NSW Central West, which snuck in at number 10.
Topping the list was Martinique in the Carribean, followed by Panama City Beach in Florida and coming in third was Armacao dos Buzios in Brazil.

With international borders likely to be largely closed off until next year, all eyes are on where to go and what to see in our own backyard.
According to the latest data, more than half of TripAdvisor travellers say they are more likely to take an outdoor or nature trip than they were before the pandemic.
As a result, many of the South Pacific destinations featured on the Travellers’ Choice Emerging Destinations for 2021 were outdoor destinations. In the inaugural National Parks 2021 list, Australia’s own Freycinet National Park is ranked number 18 on the global list.
