One of Europe’s most walkable cities is a ‘full-blown fairytale’

Looking to book a city break? One of Europe’s top destinations has also been described as one of its most walkable.

According to research from the expert team at Preply, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most pedestrian friendly cities. Its major attractions are just over two miles walk from each other and tourists can reach them all in under an hour.

The Dutch capital city is pretty compact, making it easy to explore on foot. The Netherlands has a low rate of traffic accidents and pedestrians and cyclists are usually prioritised on Amsterdam’s roads.

According to Dutch paper Het Parool, only 19 percent of Amsterdam’s residents actually use a car every day and only a third of residents own one.

Europe’s ‘Venice of the North’ is packed with attractions, including the Van Gogh Museum. A Tripadvisor spokesperson said: “From its picturesque canals and bridges to its historic homes, Amsterdam is a full-blown fairytale.”

But all that walking can lead to crowds in popular tourist areas. De 9 Straatjes, is a small neighbourhood of nine streets, packed with boutique shops and cafes.

However, the neighbourhood’s popularity has meant it gets very crowded, particularly during peak tourist season. ‘LondonFamily88’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Lots of small shops and eateries, however rather busy and difficult to meander with so many crowds, narrow pavements and bikes.”

Amsterdam has introduced several measures to reduce the number of tourists visiting the city, including a ban on cruise ships in the city centre. There are also plans to move the red light district to the suburbs.

Amsterdam will soon have the highest tourist tax in the EU as officials seek to reduce the number of tourists travelling to the city.

If the pavements feel too congested, Amsterdam is also perfect to explore on two wheels. The Netherlands is famed for cycling and the Dutch capital’s flat landscape makes it the ideal destination to explore on bike.

There are over 400km of bike lanes and the city is thought to have 1.2 million bikes, despite being home to just 821,000 people.

However, Amsterdam isn’t Europe’s cycling capital. That title is held by a Danish city where nearly half of residents cycle to work.
