People unimpressed as flight attendant’s in-flight cooking skills ‘like in jail’

A flight attendant has explained how she heats up her food on-board the plane without using an oven or microwave. While many of us have enjoyed hot food on a plane the methods of heating it up aren’t like those of normal kitchens.

Usually, the cabin crew will heat up plane meals using a specialised convection oven that uses hot air. The dishes are already prepped before being loaded onto the plane and stored in special trays to be heated.

However, it seems flight attendants can’t always use these special ovens and some planes may not even have them if they don’t offer hot meals. So, a flight attendant has explained how she heats up her dinner while working at 35,000ft – and you might be surprised.

Jade Naomi, a lifestyle vlogger and flight attendant, posted a video clip to TikTok, @jadenaomii1, to show how she heats up her spaghetti dinner on the plane with "no oven [and] no microwave". However, her fans were horrified by the tactic which they said seemed like a "jail" cooking hack.

Naomi said: "We back at it again with some airplane shenanigans. Y'all know we have no ovens, we don’t even have a microwave on these planes. So we have to make do."

Showing how she heats up her Tupperware full of pasta, Naomi poured hot water from the coffee pot into a bin bag. She then placed the box inside and fastened the top of the bin liner and placed that inside of another bin bag.

She said: "So we brew some water, put the Tupperware in the hot water and tie it up. Let it sit for about 30 minutes." She placed the bagged water inside a metal drawer in the galley and said it could be there for as long as 45 minutes.

Naomi continued: "We put it in there to keep it hot. After like 45 minutes we take it out, It’s like eating a hot meal. Most of the time we have cold meals so having a hot meal when you’re in this lifestyle is like a blessing."

The video quickly gathered attention and commenters were shocked at the extreme lengths the cabin crew has to go to to heat up their meals. One person joked: "Y’all been to jail."

Another said: "Girl I wouldn’t even be hungry no more". A third added: "This how we cook in jail, y’all are in jail, welcome."

Other cabin crew pointed out that this was not the method used on all planes. One woman said: "This is jail behavior. This video does not represent all airlines."

Others said they asked gate agents to heat up their food when they stopped while some noted that other planes did have ovens the crew could use.

However, some crew members said they would "use this trick" when flying. So, be nice to your flight attendants – they might be heating up their meal in a bin bag!
