Portugal ditches Covid travel rules for Brits in time for summer

Portugal holidays just got that little bit easier to plan, as the holiday hotspot has just scrapped the last of its Covid travel rules.

Previously you needed to be able to show proof of Covid vaccination or a negative Covid test if you wanted to head to the sunny hotspot for holidays.

However, in a huge boost for the summer, Portugal has just changed its rules and scrapped entry requirements entirely. The new rules have already come into force, so anyone with a holiday booked will now no longer need to meet previous criteria.

The Foreign Office has subsequently changed its advice to explain: "There are no COVID vaccination or testing requirements for entry to mainland Portugal, Madeira and Porto Santo."

There are still some face mask rules in place around Portugal; anyone aged 9 and over will be asked to wear a face mask on public transport, when travelling by air or in the likes of taxis.

Other than that, Covid restrictions have been lifted. However, there is one exception in the easing of rules; holidays in the Azores.

In the Azores, Covid travel rules are still in place. If you have a trip planned, you'll need one of the following to enter; proof of Covid vaccination, a PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure, an antigen test taken within 24 hours, or "valid evidence" of recent recovery from Covid.

Still, mainland Portugal tends to be the hotspot for the summer, and there's heaps to see and do if you are thinking of booking a last-minute trip.

For example Lisbon has a brilliant nightlife and some truly great restaurants, while the Algarve is where you'll find plenty of those golden sand beaches with clear waters, and promenades packed with bars and shops (not to mention it's where you'll find plenty of great all-inclusive resorts).

Travel rules can change quickly during the pandemic. Always check the Foreign Office's latest Portugal travel advice before booking or going on a trip.
