Queen and Prince Philip had ‘choreographed routine’ says insider

Queen Elizabeth has had to travel extensively on behalf of the Royal Family during her long life. Prince Philip often joined her on trips abroad, before the pair handed jet-setting duties over to younger members of the monarchy. So how were the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh with each other when they travelled?

It seems that the pair, just like most couples, do occasionally get frustrated with one another.

One incidence of this took place when the royal pair were in the USA on a state visit.

Elizabeth and Philip visited America in July 1976.

They were there to celebrate the bicentenary of the Declaration of Independence.

American writer Susan Crossland accompanied the tour and observed how the royal couple behaved with one another.

She noted on one occasion that the Queen did not attempt to hide her annoyance at her husband.

In fact, Elizabeth was very vocal with her feelings, according to Crossland.

The Queen snapped at him in public and told the Duke to “shut up.”

Royal author Sarah Bradford quoted the writer in her 2012 book Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Our Times.

“On one occasion when Philip was sounding off about something, the Queen said to him quite sharply, ‘Oh Philip, do shut up. You don’t know what you’re talking about’,” Crossland said.

This was far from the only time Elizabeth let her anger towards Philip show.

On a 1954 royal tour to Australia, a rare public argument between the couple was inadvertently caught by the press.

During the visit, an Australian film crew witnessed an interesting insight into the royal marriage.

They were outside the royals’ chalet in Victoria when the incident occurred.

The camera team witnessed Prince Philip storm out of the front door.

Moments later the Queen emerged, visibly infuriated and raging as she charged after her spouse.

She was seen shouting at Philip and even hurling a tennis racket and tennis shoes at him.

The monarch proceeded to repeatedly “drag” the Duke back into the chalet and the door slammed shut.

After this, the Queen re-emerged and said: “I’m sorry for that little interlude but, as you know, it happens in every marriage. Now, what would you like me to do?”

The footage never surfaced as the royal press secretary at the time, Richard Colville, approached the film crew and demanded the film be handed over.
