Ryanair issues travel warning as its ‘forced to cancel’ flights

Ryanair issued a warning for passengers travelling to or from Charleroi in Belgium over the weekend.

The budget airline said it had been “forced to cancel” a small number of flights due to a pilot strike.

It said: “While over 60 percent of Ryanair flights to/from Belgium will operate as scheduled on Sat 29/Sun 30 July, we have regrettably been forced to cancel a small number of flights to/from Charleroi due to a strike by a small number of Belgium-based pilots.

“All affected customers have been advised of their options to bring forward their flights to Thursday or Friday or delay till Monday or Tuesday or receive a full refund if they wish to cancel their flight booking.”

The pilots are striking over pay and rest days and will affect passengers travelling to and from Charleroi.

According to the union, pilots agreed to take a 20 percent pay cut at the start of the pandemic and that has stayed in place.

Ryanair flights to and from Brussels are operated by international pilots so will not be affected by this action.

An airline spokesperson said: “Ryanair regrets any inconvenience caused to a small number of our Belgian passengers on Sat/Sun by this unnecessary pilot strike.

“Ryanair’s Belgian pilots and their union have been offered a similar pay increase to that recently agreed with Ryanair pilot unions in most other EU countries.

“These unnecessary strikes will only cost our Belgian pilots lost pay when there is already a generous pay increase available to them and their union.”

Affected passengers should have been contacted by the airline with options while other passengers should check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.

Strikes have threatened to disrupt summer travel across Europe although some action has been cancelled following resolution.

Security staff at Heathrow Airport called off planned strikes after they voted to accept a pay offer.

However, Britons are likely to be impacted by train strikes including action called for July 29.
