Brits can now jet off to sunny Spain but they will have to quarantine for 10 days upon their return to the UK. It is no longer illegal to travel to Spain but the government has warned against visiting amber destinations for non-essential trips.
Spain has lifted all restrictions for UK travellers. They will no longer need to quarantine or take a Covid test upon arrival, but restrictions still apply when Brits return to the UK.
Spain is still on the UK’s amber list, those who travel there will need to take two Covid tests on day two and day eight after their arrival back into the UK.
They must self-isolate at home for 10 days, although this time can be reduced if they take an additional test on day five and it comes back negative.
Those hoping to holiday in the country may have to wait a little longer as non-essential travel is only permitted to countries on the ‘green list’.
Boris Johnson has urged the public not to take unnecessary trips abroad.
He said: “I think it’s very important for people to grasp what an amber list country is: it is not somewhere where you should be going on holiday, let me be very clear about that.
“And if people do go to an amber list country, they absolutely have to for some pressing family or urgent business reason, then please bear in mind that you will have to self-isolate, you’ll have to take tests and do your passenger locator form and all the rest of it.”
Despite government warnings, there has been a surge in bookings to the popular holiday destination after the Spanish government gave UK tourists the green light, lifting all travel restrictions into the country.
Up to 100,000 Brits are expected to travel to Spain this week despite official warnings against travel to amber list countries.
Around 30 direct flights from the UK bound for Spain will take off today, and this figure is expected to rise to 65 departures daily by the end of the week.
Good Morning Britain’s Dr Hilary expressed concern on the Lorraine show this morning. He said the fact that Spain does not even require a negative PCR test is “worrying”.
Dr Hilary said: “Spain is desperately keen for tourism as their economy depends on it. I understand that, but they are still on the amber list.
Those who do not follow the restrictions on travel could face fines of up to £10,000 so if you have booked a summer holiday abroad check before you travel.
The current options if you are in need of a well-deserved break are limited, but countries such as Portugal and Gibraltar have made it onto the green list.
Holiday makers returning from a green list will not need to quarantine, and will only need to take one Covid test two days after returning to the UK.
