Spanish city warns Brits to start covering up as it bans ‘disgusting’ outfits

A popular tourist city in Spain has banned "obscene acts" and "sexist costumes" after being flooded with stag and hen dos.

Seville is a common holiday hotspot for Brits as the warmest city on Mainland Europe but officials claim that rude tourists are causing a major issue for locals. Conservative mayor José Luis Sanz announced that Seville will be rolling out new laws which ban stag and hen dos from wearing outfits that "violate the moral or sexual integrity of another person".

He also said that the city "had no interest" in enticing foreign tourists to visit for pre-wedding celebrations, reports the Mirror. The new laws would ban people from wearing their underwear visibly in public as well as committing "obscene acts". The changes come as locals have expressed outrage at the impact of tourism on the often very religious city in its historic centre.

"Anyone can celebrate their bachelor party in Seville. What we don’t view favourably are groups of people dressed as whatever, with brass bands behind them, disturbing the many residents of Seville — especially in areas of the historic centre — who also have the right to enjoy their city," Sanz said.

The new rules mean Brits – among other foreign holidaymakers – celebrating cannot wear outfits that would "violate the moral or sexual integrity of another person". Any acts of "obscene exhibitionism" and "performance of acts that violate sexual freedom" are also to be forbidden.

It’s not yet known what the penalties for the unacceptable behaviour will be – but locals seem to support the mayor’s position and plans. Speaking with Spain's Antena 3 TV station, one resident said: "People come naked. You can see everything." Meanwhile a daily newspaper in the area, ABC, states that props and costumes have included inflatable penises. It stated that this "sometimes provoke looks of disgust, especially among the older neighbours".

Seville is not the only town to be cracking down on stag and hen dos and other disruptive tourists. In 2014, Mojácar said it would not allow stag and hen parties showing off "phallic tiaras" or "unbecoming behaviour with inflatable sex dolls".

Meanwhile, earlier this year, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, asked British men aged 18 to 35 to "stay away" from the city. The City Council said that "nuisance" tourists are no longer welcome.

Amsterdam’s officials have already put many new rules in place to fight against the swathes of stag and hen dos and booze weekenders causing havoc in the city. These include forcing brothels to shut their doors during certain times of the day and night. Plus, alcohol can no longer be sold in some areas outside of designated times.

Even popular Lanzarote has said it would now prefer German tourists over British ones to visit. The leader of Lanzarote has said the Canary Island is now looking for a "higher-quality" of visitors – which includes looking to other markets such as Germany. Its new strategy aims to "reduce dependence on the British market", despite the loyalty of such a group when it comes to filling the sunbeds and eating the fry-ups laid out by hospitality workers there each summer.
