Spanish region with the most British expats named – full list
Spain is one of Europe’s most popular destinations for British expats but where do the majority of Britons end up settling down? According to a new study a coastal region has the most UK residents.
According to figures from Spain’s Ministry of Migrations, just under 410,000 British citizens live in Spain. Although Brexit has made it more complicated for Britons to move to the EU, many are still tempted to relocate.
New research from the team at Moving to Spain has named Alicante as the most popular region for British expats. There are over 76,000 Britons living in the region.
Expats tend to live in the region’s larger towns and cities with sizeable UK populations in Torrevieja, Benidorm, Javea, Rojales and Calpe.
Most of these towns are close to the Costa Blanca’s biggest tourist destinations. But which other areas of Spain are popular with British expats?

Alicante is known for its busy seaside resorts but the city also has plenty of attractions for expats and tourists. One of the top-rated beaches near the city is Playa de San Juan.
A tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “Fabulous beach. Wonderful promenade for a long safe walk with cafes and bars along the way.”
According to one study, Benidorm is the most “British” city in Spain due to the high number of pubs, restaurants and venues catering to British tastes there. Expats won’t struggle to find a pub showing the Premier League or a plate of fish and chips in the Spanish town.
But while Alicante is the country’s most popular region for expats, it’s not the best region to buy a holiday home in Spain. According to the property experts at idealista, Spain’s Costa del Sol is the ideal region for a second home.
Britons moving to Spain will need to apply for residency as British citizens can only stay in Spain for 90 out of every 180 days without a visa.
