Spectacular Spanish town built into cliffs is ‘simply beautiful’

Spain is one of the UK’s top holiday destinations and from Barcelona to Benidorm, the country has some incredible hotspots to explore. However, a small town in southern Spain is a must-see.

Sentinel de las Bodegas in Cadiz province in southern Spain is incredibly unique. The small town’s houses are built into the rockface.

Sitting along a river gorge, many of the houses sit inside caves with some tucked away under the rocks. Tourists will find restaurants and cafes concealed inside boulders.

The villagers originally built their houses in the rock to keep the dwellings cool in summer and warm in the winter months.

The town’s main street is Calle Cuevas del Sol or “Caves of the Sun”, built under a huge overhanging rock.

A tourist ‘Elizabeth C’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Breathtaking geography on this sunny street, as a result of the rock formations. Great for photo opportunities and a coffee on one of the cafe terraces.”

‘Redhead_roaming’ wrote: “Simply beautiful with the sun shining and the foliage! You can definitely take lots of pictures of this area, so very cool!”

Another tourist wrote: “This entire town is by far the most unique place we visited on this trip and frankly, outside of the puebla of the western US, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

After exploring the streets, tourists can head up to Nazari Castle, a historic Arab castle that dates back to the 12th century. Tourists can climb to the top of one of the towers to see incredible views.

Sentinel has a reputation for meat and top delicacies include pork dishes and chorizo sausage.

Surrounding farms supply the town with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables while olives are also famous in the region.

Tourists can visit the special town on a day trip from Seville, Malaga or Cadiz, all of which are under two hours drive away.

Tours are available from each of the cities. The town is usually busiest during the summer months but can get crowded at all times of year.
