Stag dos livid as Amsterdam warns British lads to ‘stay away’ from the city

Today, it was announced that Amsterdam was launching a campaign to discourage British tourists from visiting the city.

The capital of the Netherlands would specifically target young British men aged 18 to 35.

Amsterdam’s city council wants to discourage "nuisance" tourists and excessive drunkenness on the streets.

As such, it is targeting its latest campaign at rowdy British lads alongside new rules that limit when alcohol can be sold.

New laws have also been introduced to ban cannabis in the Red Light District and limit when brothels can be open.

The city’s new campaign is called "Stay Away" which shows people seeing special warnings when searching online for specific terms such as "pub crawl Amsterdam" and "Stag Party Amsterdam."

Amsterdam’s City Council said: "The campaign will commence in Great Britain, aimed at males in the age category of 18 to 35 years.

"This online discouragement campaign is aimed at nuisance tourists who want to visit Amsterdam to ‘go wild’, with all the ensuing consequences."

However, in light of the new campaign British men and stag do organisers have hit back at the city’s stance.

Jon Stainer, Director of Operations of StagWeb.co.uk – one of the UK’s leading stag party organisers – said: “Whilst we understand the position of the local authorities wanting to combat anti-social behaviour, it’s pretty lazy stereotyping to tarnish all Brits with the same brush.

"We send thousands of responsible stags to Amsterdam each year, pumping a lot of money into the local economy, who go there and have a good time without causing carnage.

"Unfortunately, it will be the one per cent that take it too far and we accept that it’s our duty as one of the UK’s leading stag planners to do more to educate them on behaving properly whilst they’re there.

"It would be regrettable for Amsterdam and the vast majority of law-abiding British tourists to suffer due to the actions of a few individuals."

Meanwhile, on Twitter, British men have hurled accusations of "discrimination" at the city council.

One bloke wrote: "Would like to add that this is clearly discriminatory and based on the worst imaginable stereotypes.

"Vast majority of British tourists are fine, obviously. Just saying I get the reaction."

While a woman named Justine said: "Just British men who behave like that is it? Amsterdam turning itself into the sex and drugs capital of Europe has nothing to do with it then."

A third commented: "So the Dutch who flood Antwerp every weekend to get wasted, ride around on their beerbikes, are obnoxious and loud and p*ss against the cathedral walls….don’t want the same thing happening in their own towns…well, well, well."

Some took the matter more jokingly, as one man added: "If they really wanted young Brits to stay away they'd mention the €11 pint of Heineken in my hotel bar on my last visit in 2019."

Yet others agreed with the city’s stance.

One person said: "They specified British men for a very good reason."

Another added: ‘British youth are the same everywhere.

"Especially in Cyprus, in Ayia Napa. They sleep on the streets, have sex on the sidewalk, defecate in front of people's houses. Disgusting.

"They just don't know when to stop drinking and drugs."

One British man added: "Can’t disagree with this at all.

"Amsterdam is like a second home to me, but I found myself often embarrassed to be British there given some of the behaviour I witnessed from other Brits."
