Stay inside the UK’s ‘most haunted property’ where 600-year-old ghosts roam
As the stage of the third lockdown is drawing to a close, most people will be looking towards fun summer holidays at the beach or on the hillsides.
But for the most daring of adventurers a 600-year-old York house rumoured to be haunted by ghosts may be better suited.
The Trembling Madness Apartments are situated in the shadow of York minster behind "The House of Trembling Madness" in a hidden courtyard. The rooms are built on the remains of the first norman house built in 1180AD.
Based in York which is a city with a dark past filled with poverty, torture and even death.
It was even declared as the "most haunted city in Europe" by the The International Ghost Research Foundation due to its bloodstained history and over 500 reported hauntings within the ancient city walls.
Even as recently as the 1950s there have sightings of ghosts in the town. In 1953, an apprentice plumber was working in the cellars of the Treasurer’s House when he suddenly heard a distant sound of a horn.
Soon after the horn he was shocked to see a great carthorse emerging through the brick wall, ridden by a dishevelled Roman soldier. As this city was founded by the Romans in 71AD, it's easier to believe this legend.
Whether you believe the legend or not, the room has now been turned into a quirky Airbnb with one king-sized bed and a double sofa bed.
While the history of this timber-framed medieval structure is unknown, evidence of hauntings from previous residents make this an exciting visit for fans of the horror genre.

While the rooms have the ambiance of an 11th-century ghostly house, it's completely decked out with all the amenities of a modern hotel, including high-speed Wi-Fi, fridges, and microwaves.
So perhaps the spooky noises guests keep hearing was actually the Romans trying to figure out how the toaster works.
The people who stayed in those rooms seemed to love the place.
"A truly unique place. Quirky but in a most wonderful way" one reviewer said.

Another suspected her room may be haunted and wrote, "Although I'm not sure I believe in ghosts, I thought it might be fun to see one if they do exist. That feeling changes a bit when laying in bed in the pitch black and hearing noises from the old house!"
"The Chamber ticked all the boxes for us with history seeping out of the walls, bad taxidermy, squeaky floorboards, and a four-poster bed," another one added.
