Tesco opens UK’s first hot cross bun cafe – with brunch and fine dining from £5

Tesco has opened the doors to the UK’s first ever hot cross bun café.

Due to the surge in popularity for the Easter food staple, the supermarket is offering people a one-of-a-kind dining experience, to help everyone make Easter their own this year.

You'll have to be quick though, as the Tesco Hot Cross Bun Café is open in Shoreditch, London, for one week only.

It is offering a range of hot cross bun-filled dining experiences to suit all tastes – from brunch to afternoon tea and even five-course fine dining, all from just £5 per head.

What's better is that all of the café’s proceeds will go to the supermarket’s charity partner, the Trussell Trust, helping them to provide emergency food and support to people in crisis this Easter.

The cafe is daily from 10am till late, and serves brunch and afternoon tea during the daytime, before transforming into an adults-only five-course dining experience in the evening.

The cafe has walk-in slots available after dinner reservations sold out within days.

However, reservations for brunch and afternoon tea can still be made via OpenTable.

Every dish and cocktail served at the café is made with Tesco products.

They include vegan ‘Hot Cross Bangers and Smash’ at brunch, Hot Cross Scones at afternoon tea, and Hot Cross Bun Espresso Martinis and Hot Cross Bun Steak Tartare at dinner.

To make sure everyone can enjoy the experience, plant-based and gluten free options are available at every session.

The Tesco Hot Cross Bun Café is also perfectly Insta-worthy, with it featuring stunning overhead floral displays, designed to feel like a spring garden, while the exterior of the venue is covered in a unique flower wall display.

Visitors can also enjoy a dedicated ‘selfie-space’ inside, complete with floor to ceiling flower walls and an ‘Easter throne’ to sit on.

For parents looking to entertain the kids over the holidays, each of the daytime brunch sessions include colour in menus and children’s goody bags, making it the perfect treat for families this Easter.

The café launch comes amidst soaring sales and increasing innovations for the hot cross bun.

Sales at Tesco were up by a fifth (20%) in 2021, while sales of its Finest Hot Cross Bun range grew by a third (30%).

Tesco has unveiled arguable its most exciting range of the spiced sweet buns to date this year, with 11 hot cross bun inspired innovations on offer, including new products within its Tesco Finest range: Tesco Finest Blueberry Hot Cross Buns, Tesco Finest Hot Cross Bun Bread & Butter Pudding and Tesco Finest Hot Cross Scones.

For those unable to make it in-person to the pop-up café in Shoreditch, Tesco in-store cafes across the UK will also be serving up one of the dishes from the Hot Cross Bun Café for a limited time only – the Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream Sandwich.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco Chief Customer Officer said: “After two years of pared back celebrations, we wanted to do something special to bring people together this Easter – both through the Tesco Hot Cross Bun Café experience, and with this year’s products.

“The hot cross bun is very much having a moment in 2022, as reflected by our focus on quality at an affordable price along with innovation in this year’s ranges. We wanted to make sure that this year’s was our best, but also go one step further and create a memorable Easter experience that allows hot cross bun lovers to enjoy our extensive offering in a variety of new and unexpected ways, while celebrating with family and friends.”
