Greece is made up of 6,000 islands although only 227 of these are inhabited. The Mediterranean country is one of the UK’s top holiday destinations but which island is the best? A new ranking from Conde Nast Traveller has identified Greece’s best holiday islands.

Santorini was crowned as Greece’s best island for holidays in 2023’s hotlist. According to the ranking, the island is ideal for honeymooners and tourists visiting Greece for the first time.
Conde Nast described the view over Santorini’s caldera as a “romantic cliche” but one that still “takes your breath away”.
Santorini’s unique and rugged landscape was eternally shaped by a devastating volcanic eruption around 3,500 years ago. Houses in the Greek beauty spot overlook the underwater caldera.
There’s not a whole lot to do on Santorini but lie on one of the stunning black sand beaches or take a boat trip to the caldera. But who needs anything else when you’re in paradise?

Lesser-known Syros took second place on the coveted ranking which Conde Nast recommends for culture.
The quirky island hosts several festivals celebrating dance, film, classical music and jazz, and rembetiko. First created by a local musician, rembetiko is a form of Greek blues.
While Syros’s beaches aren’t quite as spectacular as those at some of Greece’s other hotspots, the island has a fast-growing foodie reputation.
Head to a beachside taverna to enjoy fresh fish, seafood, pastries and gelato, said to be some of Greece’s best.
Corfu rounded off the top three in the rankings and is best known for its lush landscapes and beaches.
Conde Nast describes the island as the “it girl” of the Ionian archipelago with a “charming clash” of Venetian, British and French influences.
While the island’s interior has rolling olive groves, lush greenery and pastel coloured houses, Corfu also boasts some of Greece’s best beaches.
Tourists can rent a boat to explore isolated coves and bays before stopping for a taverna meal.
For sandy beaches, tourists could head to Naxos, the fourth island on the ranking. The island’s powdery sand is perfect for children to play in.
Kefalonia took fifth place on the list and was described as the ideal spot for a “laidback” family holiday.
Foodies looking to sample some of Greece’s delicacies might prefer a trip to Sifnos where chickpea croquettes and stewed capers are staples.
Other popular Greek island hotspots such as Zakynthos, Crete and Paxos landed just outside the coveted top 10 ranking.
