The Louvre Just Put Its Entire Art Collection Online for Free

Now you don’t have to go all the way to Paris to see the Louvre’s iconic collection, which includes works like the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. The museum announced Friday that it would be putting all of its artwork online—and that anyone can view any of it, for free.”Today, the Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known,” President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, Jean-Luc Martinez, said in a press release.”For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage. The Louvre’s stunning cultural heritage is all now just a click away!”

What’s the catch? There is none! Head to the Louvre’s collections page to view over 480,000 works of art whenever you’d like. On this new database, you’ll also find works from Paris’s Musée National Eugène-Delacroix, as well as sculptures from the nearby Tuileries and Carrousel gardens.

Go directly to see the piece you’re interested in without fighting a crowd, browse the entire collection by theme, or mimic the experience of aimlessly wandering the Louvre’s halls in person using their interactive map feature. (The Louvre is still closed to all-person visitors due to Paris’s lockdown, according to its website, so this is really the best way to see it at present!) The best part? The database will continually be updated to reflect new works, so you’ll be first in line to see them.
