Europe is the perfect continent to experience via a river cruise as it’s home to over 150 transboundary rivers, with the largest on the continent being the Volga, the Danube and the Dnipro.
New research from travel insurance price comparison site, PayingTooMuch, have revealed the most beautiful river cruise destinations in Europe thanks to social media data.
Analysing the most photographed river cruise destinations on Instagram and TikTok, the PayingToomuch team looked at the combined number of hashtags for “[location]rivercruise” and “[location]cruise”.

1. Seine – 14,918,547 total number of posts and views
The Seine is the most picturesque river cruise in Europe thanks to nearly 15 million Instagram posts and TikTok views combined.
Running through one of the most romantic cities in the world, the Seine offers breathtaking views of all of Paris’ most iconic attractions and landmarks. From the Eiffel Tower to the Notre Dame Cathedral, this atmospheric cruise isn’t short of spectacular sights.
2. Rhine – 2,150,155 total number of posts and views
Passing through three countries (The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland), the Rhine flows over 765 miles.

Flowing through a staggering 10 countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine), including four major European capital cities (Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade), the Danube is a dream for tourists wishing to explore the variety of Europe.
4. Douro – 39, 752 total number of posts and views
Some way behind the top three in fourth place is the Douro river with just under 40,000 total posts and views.
Located in the Iberian peninsula and flowing through Spain and Portugal, the Douro is a scenic river flanked by terraced vineyards and steep hills.
The Douro valley is synonymous with wine, and there are plenty of opportunities for tourists to sample the authentic local produce.
